“Balancing High Standards with Love for the Game”
Yesterday, two of my players were preparing for the Girls ECNL playoffs. It was a tough session—uncharacteristically poor touches, misplaced passes, shots off-target. Frustration quickly set in, it happens. But what stood out most wasn’t their mistakes—it was their determination to improve, asking to repeat exercises, demanding more from themselves.
They’re only 13, yet their standards and expectations are incredibly high. It’s inspiring to see, but it also reminds me of something critical: at this age, my role isn’t just to push performance, it’s to nurture their love for soccer. High-pressure environments can quickly drain the joy from the game, and losing that passion is the last thing I want for my players.
As a coach, I try to model humility and make sure our sessions stay enjoyable, even when challenging.
How do you help young players maintain their passion for the game when faced with high-pressure environments?
